VoBA To Sponsor December 16 Screening and Panel Discussion of
Film, Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price
Champaign, Illinois – The Champaign County Volunteers For A Better America (“VoBA”) announced today that it will be sponsoring a screening and panel discussion of Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price, which Rob Reiner has described as “a brilliant new film by Robert Greenwald tell[ing] the real story of the corrosive effects that Wal-Mart wreaks upon the communities in which it operates and the men and women it employs.”
The event, which will be free and open to the public, will be held on December 16 at IBEW Hall in Champaign (directions below). Refreshments will be served at 6:00 p.m., and the movie will be shown at 6:30 p.m. Following the movie, a panel discussion that will address topics including the effect of Wal-Mart’s expansion in our local Champaign-Urbana community will be held featuring Lorraine Cowart, Chairwoman of the Champaign County Board’s Highway Committee; Mike Herbert, Business Manager of Electricians LU #601 and a member of the University of Illinois’s Labor-Management Committee; Ron Peters, Professor Emeritus of the University of Illinois’s Institute of Labor & Industrial Relations and Retired Head of its Labor Education Program; and Cynthia Williams, Professor of Law at the University of Illinois College of Law and a leading expert in the field of corporate social responsibility.
Linda Beale, a founder of VoBA and an organizer of the event, said, “With two Wal-Marts already in the Champaign-Urbana area, and at least one more planned, it is important that local citizens learn more about how Wal-Mart affects our local community. This movie, and a panel that includes perspectives of government planners, labor organizers, and academic experts in the fields of labor and corporate responsibility, provides an excellent opportunity to have this important discussion.”
